630 students victims of sexual offences in 2012

The National Substance Abuse Advisory Council today revealed that 630 students were victims of sexual offences in Fiji last year.
Of the offences committed against students, rape was the highest at 215 cases reported, indecently annoying a person at 175 cases, while indecent assault was the third highest with 93 cases reported.
Southern Division registered the highest number of sexual offences at 249 cases,  the Western Division recorded 155 cases whilst the Eastern Division reported 100.
Majority of the victims range from 15 to 16 years old with the youngest being 4 years old.

Meanwhile, a 14 year old class 8 student of Tavua who allegedly raped a class 2 student in a primary school compound this month, has been released by police.

Police questioned the suspect in the presence of his father before releasing him.

The boy is alleged to have raped the girl during recess break between June 17 – June 21.

The mother of the victim lodged a complaint with the police when the child started experiencing body pains.

Last week,  a 16 year old boy was charged for raping a youngster in Nadi.

Also, , police investigations continue into the alleged murder-suicide of a couple whose bodies were discovered lying in a pool of blood in their Vatuwaqa home. Relatives, friends and workmates of the 32 year olds are currently being questioned by police.
