DPP to decide on child death charges

The Director of Public Prosecutions is yet to make a decision on whether to lay charges against people allegedly responsible for the deaths of their children through negligence.

Five files on the deaths of children through drowning and a case of fire was sent to the the DPP’s Office for a decision on possible charges.

Police chief Brigadier General Ioane Naivalurua had ordered his officers to look into the issue of alleged parental negligence.

Out of the 75 drowning deaths last year, 16 were children below 12 years. And of the 25 deaths this year, four were below 12 years.
