Fiji Corrections Service rubbishes woman’s claim

The Fiji Corrections Service has rubbished claims by allegedly assaulted convict, Iowane Benedito’s mother that her son is not being allowed family visits.

The FCS has confirmed that Benedito, 27, is being allowed visitations like any other inmate but no one has visited him yet.

Benedito’s mother, Viriseini Vakarau told local media that when she and her daughter went to visit him in Korovou in March, they were advised that he had been transferred to Naboro, where she was stopped from seeing him.

She claimed that she checked with the officer in charge in May but was advised that she could not visit Benedito. Vakarau claimed that she has only spoken to her son on the phone.

Benedito is currently serving time in prison for escaping from the Suva Corrections Centre in November 2012. His family had earlier said that they will lodge an official complaint with the police against the men who allegedly assaulted him during his arrest.

Vakarau has confirmed that he was one of the handcuffed men who was allegedly assaulted. She said she saw her son lying in the tray of the truck during his arrest which was also part of a video which was leaked on the internet in March.

Vakarau admitted that her son had done something wrong but she wants everyone involved to be held accountable for their actions.

Police had earlier said that no further comment would be made on this matter until investigations are complete and the findings are released by the government.
