Saimoni Tuitoga has forced his way into the extended 18-man East Asia Pacific squad to compete at the International Cricket Council (ICC) EAP Quad Series in Australia in August.
Tuitoga and senior national reps Sekove Ravoka, Tukana Tavo and Maciu Gauna were all named in the team selected by ICC — the governing body of cricket in the Pacific.
The 16-year-old Tuitoga impressed the national U17 side and has been a revelation for the Police team in the weekly club competition.
Cricket Fiji high performance unit manager Joe Rika said Tuitoga was the youngest ever player to be named in the team.
“He is a star of the future,” Rika said.
“All the players were assessed from their performance at international level. But for Saimoni, he played only for the U17 team and then he had a consistent performance for Police during the club competition.”
He said to have four Fijians in the squad was a massive achievement. “This is the first time for all these four players to make it into the team. It is a massive achievement and I believe it reflects the development that we are doing,” Rika said.
“Congratulation to the boys and I hope they will give their best shot if given a chance to play.”
The 18-member squad is expected to be trimmed to 14 at the end of the week.
