The Fiji Police Force has upgraded its presence in the western division to protect sugar cane farmers following the huge $31m payout to farmers in the division.

Security has been upgraded at banks and supermarkets from Sigatoka to Rakiraki while officers will also be patrolling the western division to ensure that all transactions are conducted the right way.

The fourth cane payment was delivered yesterday.

According to government, the payout was a result of the sugar reforms implemented in 2010.
