The Prime Minister, Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama Fijiana 7s women’s team for winning the Bowl final in the Moscow RWC.Hee said that while every Fijian is naturally disappointed that the Fiji men’s side was defeated by New Zealand in the Cup semi final, the country is extremely proud and pleased at the performance of the women’s team.
The Fijiana created history by winning their first ever major title by defeating Netherlands 12-10 to win the Bowl.
Commodore Bainimarama praised the Fijiana side for their spirited performance and said it signals a new era for women’s rugby in Fiji and he wants to pay tribute to the team for the way in which they fought hard for their two point win, and they have brought great credit to our country and deserve a tremendous reception when they return.
He further said that this achievement has set a great example to young women and their win is bound to increase the participation of women in the sports.
Commodore Bainimarama also praised the Fiji Sevens team, saying it is important for the country to stand behind them in defeat as well as in victory.
Both teams return home tomorrow.
