Qarase discharged

Laisenia Qarase
Former Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase was this morning discharged by the High Court in relation to the Native Land Trust Board case after FICAC filed a nolle prosequi which means that they will not take the case any further.
Qarase was charged with two counts of abuse of office.

Former General Manager of NLTB, Kalivati Bakani and former NLTB Director and Chairman of the Vanua Development Corporation, Keni Dakuidreketi, who are charged with 4 counts of fraudulent conversion, also appeared before Justice Janaka Bandara in the High Court today.

Bakani is also charged with 1count of abuse of office.
Bakani’s counsel Filimoni Vosarogo and Dakuidreketi’s counsel Wylie Clarke advised the judge that they are yet to prepare some documents that would build their defense.
Keni Dakuidreketi
The trio was charged with conspiring to transfer ownership and control of the Extinct Mataqali Funds in 2002 without proper approvals of the NLTB and the Fijian Affairs Board.
Bakani and Dakuidreketi are also alleged to have fraudulently converted a government grant into operational costs in 2005.
The case will be back in court on July 18, 2014.
