The government has  confirmed that all scholarships will not be merged and that they will continue to give Itaukei scholarships.

The criteria to qualify for the itaukei government scholarships include that the applicants have to be either itaukei or Rotuman.

The People’s Charter Council had earlier recommended that all scholarships should be merged and there should be no more race based scholarships.

According to the charter,  scholarships should be given to students based on merit not on race.

During the draft constitution consultations, Attorney General Aiyaz Saiyad Khaiyum had said that although he could not specifically comment on whether race based scholarships will continue, other plans may be in store for students that will benefit everyone.
