Snr citizens council for Fiji

The National Council of Older Persons is expected to be established before the end of this month.

Ministry of Social Welfare permanent secretary Dr Jo Koroivueta confirmed the council’s main function would be to deal with issues concerning senior citizens.

“The council will definitely convene this month,” Dr Koroivueta said.

Fiji Council of Social Services and Helpage Centre executive director Hassan Khan said: “Government needs to develop comprehensive strategies to stop abuse of older people, including a supportive legal framework, and public education and training for public education and training for public sector staff to equip them to detect and act on abuse.”
