Abduction accused refused bail

A bus driver from Navua appeared in court yesterday afternoon charged with one count of abduction of a person under 18 years.

Rajesh Nand, 29, appeared before Magistrate Chaitanya Lakshman who refused him bail.

His bail application was strongly objected to by police prosecutor Sergeant Jiten Singh who said the 16-year-old victim was a Form Four student and that the accused and the victim lived in neighbouring settlements.

The matter has been adjourned to June 28.

It is alleged the bus driver had abducted the 16-year-old from Navua and brought her to an apartment in Suva last Friday.

Employees of the apartment alerted police who then arrested him.
