Caucau back to resurrect his rugby career

 

Rupeni Caucau is back with the Northland Rugby Union in a bid to resurrect his rugby career.

A trimmed looking Caucau is part of the Classic All Blacks that will face the Flying Fijians as part of Fiji Rugby Union’s centennial celebrations in Suva tomorrow.

The Bua man who celebrated his 33rd birthday last week drew the attention of fans during a game of touch rugby at Yavusania Village in Nadi yesterday.

Caucau said going back to New Zealand had made a big difference.

He said Northland had given him a new lease of life.

“I’m coming up slowly and have been doing my own training,” Caucau said.

“I’m now waiting for the new season to start.

“Going back has made a big difference in my life.

“I want to get back to like I was in the past. I want to be the same Rupeni who was there.

“My aim is to train hard and play good rugby in the ITM Cup. Hopefully then I can secure a contract overseas,” Caucau said.

Caucau, first secured a contract with Northland in 2001 and then went on to play for the Auckland Blues franchise before moving to France in 2004.

Regarded as one of the fastest and most flamboyant wingers, Caucau only earned seven Test caps for the Flying Fijians despite making his debut in 2003 against Argentina.

Caucau said it was up to the selectors to see if he was worthy for a recall in the Fiji team.

“I don’t know what to say about selection in the Fiji team but if the selectors see that I’m good enough to play then I will avail myself,” Caucau said.

“I’m happy to be back playing the sport I love.

“My message to the fans is to come out in numbers to witness this historic match between the Classic All Blacks and Fiji.”

The fixture is the first international match to be played at the new ANZ Stadium to kick off at 6pm.
