Fiji lost Police World Cup title

THE Fiji Police rugby league team lost its Police League World Cup title to Australia yesterday.

The national side went down to the Aussies 16-18 in the final in Leeds, England.

Fiji Police lost to Australia in its opening match 24-32 but managed to qualify for the final after 72-0 win over Great Britain.

Team manager Aporosa Lutunauga said they lost to a better team.

“Australia capitalised on some of our weak areas and they came out winners.”

Despite the loss, Fiji’s winger Navitalai Ratulevu was named the player of the tournament.

He was later named in the tournament ‘Dream Team’ along with Atunaisa Turagaiviu, Josateki Naisilisili and Ovini Burekalou.

Meanwhile, dummy half Matai Volavola underwent medical treatment after sustaining a suspected spinal injury during the final.

The Fiji team returns tomorrow.

Australia 18 (Andrew Cridland, Matt Johnstone, Sean Jenkins tries; James Bartholomew 3 goals) defeated Fiji 16 (Jonacani Eranavanua 2, Maika Navuni tries; Josateki Naisilisili 2 goals)
