Fiji resort ordered to pay over $55,000 in compensation to Aussie tourist

Court Mallet

The high court today ordered Fiji Resorts Limited, trading as Shangri La’s Fijian Resort, to pay over $55,000 in damage to an Australian tourist who had injured herself during a stay at the resort.

Meryl Burfoot, 51, was awarded $55,558 in damage with $5,500 as cost.

Burfoot slipped on a wet tiled floor at the resort in March 2008. She suffered a fractured skull and brain clot and had to undergo surgery.

The resort paid for her hospital bills and also gave her a gift certificate for a complementary stay at the resort.

However in 2010, Burfoot stopped working upon receiving medical advice.
