The Fiji Rugby Union has today stated that coach Alifereti Dere has the final say in selecting a team and he is entitled to choose the players he believes in and can work with to win the Moscow Rugby World Cup 7s.
According to the FRU, the process of selection involves using position and player profiles along with player statistics and player.
The FRU  further stated that Dere will select his 12-man team from the 21 member training squad so the last selection of the team is left at the sole discretion of the coach and sometimes involves selecting players that are ranked third on the position chart.  The Union stated that in this case, Dere may have had a different view on a player.

The FRU has urged everyone to support the coach, players and team management so that Fiji can win the Melrose Cup for an unprecedented third time.

Earlier this week, a disgruntled selector Sailosi Naiteqe senior had revealed that the national 7s selectors had ranked Marist 7s player of the tournament, Seremaia Burotu as the number one choice prop for the Fiji 7s team for the RWC but he was dropped by Dere. Naiteqe senior stepped down from his role following Dere’s decision.
