Mini games title remain out of reach for Fiji

Two days before the South Pacific Mini Games draw to an end, Team Fiji continues to bag more gold medals. However, as it stand Fiji is unlikely to retain its Games title as Papua New Guinea holds a commanding lead in the medal count.

The Fiji rugby sevens team has qualified for the semi-finals even though the side finished second after the round robin competition of rugby sevens at the Pacific Mini Games today.

The side meets either Tonga or PNG in the semi-final later today. Fiji started their day with a 24-5 win over PNG but arch pacific rivals Samoa edged them 19-12. The Fiji sevens team bounced back to thump New Caledonia in their last game by 40-0.

In other sports at the games, Husband and wife pairing of Shayne and Torika Brodie have won the gold medal in sailing competition at the Pacific Mini Games.

They also won the team gold medal on offer in Wallis and Futuna.

Meanwhile, the Fiji women’s volleyball team has won the bronze medal.

Looking at the medal count so far. PNG lead with 29 Gold, 26 Silver and 29 Bronze medals.

Tahiti is second with 25 Gold, 9 Silver and 5 Bronze, New Caledonia is third bagging 18 Gold, 10 Silver and 7 Bronze.The battle for fourth and fifth is between Samoa and Fiji. Samoa currently has a slight edge with 12 Gold, 5 Silver and 11 Bronze while Fiji with 11 Gold, 12 Silver and 15 Bronze lies in fifth place.

The South Pacific Mini Games end tomorrow.
