Over 7700 apply for social pension scheme

7723 people aged 70 years and above have applied to join the social pension scheme and 5563 have been approved.

The Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Alleviation Ministry has confirmed that the 7723 applications were received between January and April this year.

The remaining applications are currently being verified with FNPF.

The Social Pension Scheme has replaced the Expanded Food Voucher Program.

The scheme is for the elderly who are 70 years and above, who do not have a source of income or are not receiving any superannuation payments such as FNPF, ex-serviceman or After Care Funds, government pension or insurance.

Recipients of social welfare assistance such as the Care & Protection Allowance and Poverty Benefit Scheme are not be eligible for this assistance.
